Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can develop on or within the ovaries, which are a part of the female reproductive system. These cysts can vary in size, from small to large, and they can be either simple or complex. While many cysts are harmless and may go away on their own, some can cause pain, discomfort, or other symptoms. It's important to consult a healthcare professional if you suspect you have ovarian cysts or experience any related symptoms.

Diagnosis

Ovarian cysts can be diagnosed through various methods, which help determine their size, type, and whether they are causing any complications or symptoms. Different diagnostic approaches include:

Pelvic Examination: During a routine pelvic exam, a healthcare provider can often feel larger ovarian cysts. This can provide initial information about the cyst's presence and size.

Ultrasound: Transvaginal ultrasound is a common and non-invasive imaging technique that uses sound waves to create images of the ovaries. It helps determine the size, shape, and characteristics of the cyst.

Laparoscopy: If the diagnosis remains unclear or if a cyst needs to be removed, a laparoscopic procedure might be performed. This involves inserting a small camera through a small incision to directly visualize the ovaries and cysts.

Biopsy: In some cases, if there's concern about the cyst being cancerous, a tissue sample (biopsy) might be taken during surgery for further analysis.

Treatment

Watchful Waiting: Small, simple cysts that are not causing symptoms might be monitored over time to see if they resolve on their own. This approach is often taken for functional cysts that are a normal part of the menstrual cycle.

Hormonal Birth Control: Birth control pills or other hormonal contraceptives can help regulate the menstrual cycle and prevent the formation of new cysts. They can also shrink some types of cysts.

Surgical Removal: If a cyst is large, causing severe symptoms, or is suspected to be cancerous, surgical removal might be recommended. This can be done laparoscopically or through traditional surgery.
